Cost cruncher — Mighty Imp cuts costs by up to 50%

HERE it is for the first time in the UK - the unbeatable Mighty Imp. The new custom-built sewer cleaning machine can cut operational costs by as much as 50 per cent for clients. Developed from German technology by IMP Limited, the Mighty Imp arrives in Britain with an awesome reputation as a dirt-buster.

MOUNTED on a custom-built chassis, and powered by a 500 horsepower engine, the machine will complete jobs in one-quarter of the time of conventional sewer cleaning plant. It also acts as a mobile waste treatment plant, removing the need for time off-site.

Despite its power, the Mighty Imp operates as low noise level plant. It is suitable for night work in residential areas, the Mighty Imp's simultaneous computerised treatment processes are based on tried and tested technology widely used on the continent and elsewhere.

Major savings are generated because the computer-operated plant is capable of undertaking many processes simultaneously. That can reduce the time the plant has to be on site by up to a factor of four, dependent on operating conditions.

MIGHTY Imp can simultaneously jet flush sewers at pressures up to 175 bar at flows of 900 litres per minute; suck debris and effluent from depths of up to 20 metres; and continuously filter effluent for use in the high pressure pumps for reinsertion into the sewers.

At the same time, silt, sand and rubble are dewatered in the debris tank for disposal to tip. All debris removed from the sewer is cleaned by a back flushing system for odourless disposal into skips. Pressures and rates of cleaning are computer controlled and monitored by an operator on CCTV from a control panel in the cab.

The operator also has the option of remotely controlling the process at distances of up to 300 metres from the machine. The Mighty Imp is not dependent on mains fresh water for operation. All water required for sewer flushing is extracted from the sewer, itself.

Satellite system keeps us on track

AT any time of the night or day IMP Limited can pinpoint exactly where its key mobile plant is - through satellite tracking. The installation of GPS in IMP's main sewer cleaning plant simplifies the logistics of getting equipment from one site to another.

WHEN IMP carries out contracts all over the UK, it has to be constantly aware of where its large fleet of plant is. The company has introduced GPS into all its plant.

Satellite tracking can benefit clients in a number of ways. It improves IMP's response times and promotes greater efficiency of plant use, helping keep down travel time costs.

That's also beneficial when reacting to emergency call-outs for spillage or flooding. GPS also has the potential to give clients read-outs on how long plant is on-site. In the near future IMP expects clients will routinely request position read-outs because the system is an accurate information tool."

Solutions on tap — Workshop gives clients engineering back-up

ONE of the major technological strengths of IMP Limited is its strong engineering back-up. At its HQ in the East End of Glasgow it maintains a fully equipped workshop to service its fleet. At a moment's notice IMP's highly experienced fitters can be flown anywhere in the UK to carry out on-site repairs to mobile plant.

THAT saves down-time over breakdown emergencies. More normally workshop personnel are engaged in a planned programme of fleet maintenance. The workshop, manned by expert industrial fitters, also undertakes refurbishment of specialist pumping, sludge separation, vacuumation and jetting plant.

Having its own workshop gives IMP a range of in-house facilities capable of making any special fabrications required for complex or unusual jobs.

The 7000 sq. m. workshop is fully equipped. It contains an overhead crane with a lift capacity of 5 tonnes and its electric lorry lift is capable of moving 26-tonners. Other features include MIG welding and grit blasting for surface preparation of vehicles.

High tech Pipe Inspections keeps you in the picture

KEEPING sewers and pipelines operating to maximum efficiency is dependent on safe, effective and regular inspection. IMP Limited has a fleet of fully equipped inspection rigs which operate across the UK. It also has years of experience in reaching, locating and identifying underground problems.

EVERY IMP rig contains the best, most effective Pipeline Inspection technology for conducting underground and other essential surveys. Each rig is equipped with a specialised Pipeline Inspection suite of high resolution colour cameras and lightheads. Remote controlled crawler units allow surveys to be carried out on sewer mains and other pipelines, working at diameters from 150mm up to 2500mm.

Advanced digital "Flexiprobe" cameras allow very high quality pictures of smaller diameter pipes, operating at diameters of 100mm or less. IMP also operates Zone 1 explosion-proof cameras which are in constant demand within the petro-chemical industry. Operated by experienced, WTI trained personnel, IMP survey vehicles undertake all types of inspection including sewers, pipelines, culverts and water mains. The vehicles also handle borehole, chimney and tank inspections.

ALL survey reports are available in various formats and come with a site plan and video tape. The pipe-graphic report simplifies the survey information and makes the client’s job easier. New computer video-grabbing technology allows high quality photographs of pipe defects to be supplied in digital format for viewing on the clients PC. IMP rigs also carry a complete range of safety equipment from gas detectors and breathing apparatus to road signs.

Up-to-the-minute software allows reports to be provided as full colour videos or as CD-ROMs.
